Integral Media Attributes
Data is stored on the disk in its entirety. Current technology, of Near Contact Recording demands that Fly-Heights are in the nanometer (1x 10^-9 m ) ranges. Therefore, defect free disk is a critical requirement for excellent performance.
The media must possess sufficient roughness and minimum flatness so as to ensure that it does not impede with the head media interaction. Roughness must be low enough to prevent defects while maintaining minimum values to prevent stiction-related issues.
Mobile applications demand very robust hard disk drives (HDD) that can withstand mechanical and thermal pressures. For example, car navigation HDD systems must be able to operate both in extreme winter, summer and highly humid tropical regions. Thus the media is designed and tested for all these extreme conditions before they can be qualified by HDD makers.
